Channel Islands Maritime Museum Speakers Series TRAGEDY AT HONDA WITH GREG GORGA Thursday, September 15, 2016 6:30 pm social, 7:00 Speaker Channel Islands Maritime Museum3900 Bluefin Circle Oxnard, CA, 93035 United States To this day the “Tragedy at Honda” is considered the largest naval disaster during peace time in U.S. history. On September 8, 1923 seven U S Navy ships grounded in less than 5 minutes at Honda Point, California and were lost. Director of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Greg Gorga will discuss the events that led up to this tragedy, and the domino effect they had in causing the death of 23 brave U.S. Navy sailors, using dozens of photos taken in the days after the accident. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is open daily 11-5 pm. Located in Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor at 3900 Bluefin Circle. The permanent exhibits include a seascape gallery of rare and beautiful maritime paintings dating back to the 1600’s and more than sixty world-class models of historic ships, interactive contemporary exhibits and a gift shop. Admission to the museum is $5 for non-members, $4 for seniors 62+, $2 for children 6-17, free for members and children under 6. Info: cimmvc.org or 805.984.6260.
